Celebrating Carers Week 2025

Carers Week is a yearly celebratory campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. It takes place from Monday June 9 until Sunday 15 June.

Through talking about caring, sharing resources, and connecting through experiences, Carers Week also helps people identify and recognise their own caring roles and find support.

This year the theme is 'Caring About Equality' highlighting the inequalities faced by unpaid carers, including a greater risk of poverty, social isolation, poor mental and physical health. Far too often, carers of all-ages miss out on opportunities in their education, careers, or personal lives, just because of their caring role.

Research shows that carers in Camden experience significantly poorer health outcomes than non-carers, with over a quarter reporting they are not in good health. Notably, 26% of carers are themselves living with long-term illness or disability. Health disparities are especially pronounced among those providing intensive care, such as the 570 Black, Asian and other minority ethnic carers delivering more than 50 hours of care each week who report being in poor health. The emotional toll is also substantial: in 2023–24, 1,708 carers accessed local counselling services for mental health support.

These challenges were clearly reflected in the feedback we received during the development of Camden’s Carers Action Plan. Carers spoke about the isolation and loneliness that often come with their role, and the value of peer support in helping them feel seen and understood. They also highlighted the financial strain of caring, made worse by the ongoing cost-of-living crisis. Carers told us they need practical help—such as support with bills and transport costs, tailored financial advice, and access to grants and benefits. Many carers also spoke of having to put their education or career goals on hold, with 53% of Camden carers balancing paid work alongside their caring responsibilities. Carers consistently called for more flexible working options, better support in the workplace, and access to alternative care so they can pursue their own aspirations.

These insights emphasise the urgent need for collaborative action. You can read more about what carers have told us, and how we're responding, in the Carers Action Plan.

We need to work together to reach and connect with more carers, to help unpaid carers get the support they need and deserve. Thousands of individuals and organisations participate in Carers Week by supporting carers, organising events, and highlighting the importance of caregiving.

Below are some of the events and activities happening within and around Camden, as well as online this Carers Week. Please read the descriptions carefully to make sure you are eligible to attend each event.

Mad Sisters: Susan Grundy’s Memoir of Caring for her Sister 3.00 - 4.00pm

In this session, author and mental health advocate Susan Grundy shares lessons learned on her lifelong journey of caring, triggered by her older sister’s diagnosis of schizophrenia at the age of thirteen. Poignant, deeply moving and woven with humour, Susan’s recent memoir, Mad Sisters, radiates with the potential for well-being and hope despite the collateral damage of mental illness in a family. In this session, Susan will share how she saved herself from drowning in the push-pull whirlpool (resentment-guilt) of the often-overlooked sibling carer.

This is a free online event organised by Carers UK for anyone, including professionals, carers, patients and members of the public.
