Managing Challenging Behaviour

Definition
Challenging Behaviour is a behaviour/s of such an intensity, frequency or duration that the physical safety of the person or others is likely to be placed in serious jeopardy, or is likely to seriously limit or deny access to the use of ordinary community facilities Emerson, 1988, pp 16 – 19

Aims/Outcomes
Develop a better understanding of reasons why behaviours are displayed, assess triggers to behaviours and how to deal with these, understand own behaviour and how that might impact on the child, develop anger management strategies, develop independent skills to empower parents/carers with the confidence to manage their individuals behaviour.

Process
This work will take place in the setting where the service is requested on the initial referral. This could be the family home, a classroom, or a health centre. To maximise the strength of the strategies provided, observations will need to be carried out as well as behaviour monitoring, prior to the implementation of strategies.
